Here is a list of things you will need to get started!!!

A computer and web camera (webcam). Most modern laptops come with a built-in webcam. Desktop computers will need an external webcam, which might cost anywhere from $20-$100.

A reasonable internet connection. Video chat requires not just a good download speed, but also a good upload speed (sending data from your computer over the internet). You can try testing with a friend or two to check what your connection is like.

Video chat software. Skype is free, works well, and is available for both Mac and PC.

And that’s it! I would also suggest using headphones/ear buds on one ear rather than speakers. If you find yourself doing a lot of “Skyping” you might end up upgrading your webcam and/or getting a separate USB microphone for better quality.

Many studies have shown that the benefits of an arts enriched education are numerous and may aid in producing a well-rounded student!  Listed below are some of the well-known facts and benefits of implementing arts education into your program:
Benefits of Arts Education
Source: Americans for the Arts, 2002

  • Stimulates and develops the imagination and critical thinking, and refines cognitive and creative skills.
  • Has a tremendous impact on the developmental growth of every child and has proven to help level the “learning field” across socio-economic boundaries.
  • Strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, adding to overall academic achievement and school success.
  • Develops a sense of craftsmanship, quality task performance, and goal-setting skills needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
  • Teaches children life skills such as developing an informed perception; articulating a vision; learning to solve problems and make decisions; building self-confidence and self-discipline; developing the ability to imagine what might be, and accepting responsibility to complete tasks from start to finish.
  • Nurtures important values, including team-building skills; respecting alternative viewpoints; and appreciating and being aware of different cultures and traditions.
  • The arts can play a crucial role in improving students abilities to learn because they draw on a range of intelligence and learning styles, not just the linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence upon which most schools are based. (Eloquent Evidence: Arts at the Core of Learning, Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities, talking about Howard Gardeners Theory of Multiple Intelligences, 1995)

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything; It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good, just, and beautiful.”

- Plato

“Music directly imitates the passions or states of the soul…when one listens to music that imitates a certain passion, he becomes imbued withthe same passion; and if over a long time he habitually listens to music that rouses ignoble passions, his whole character will be shaped to an ignoble form.”

- Aristotle

Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul, on which they mightily fasten, imparting grace, and making the soul of him who is rightly educated graceful, or of him who is ill-educated ungraceful.

- Socrates
